**UPDATED** Halloween drug sweep nets seven
By by Jay Corn

Seven adults were arrested and more than two pounds of marijuana seized on Friday, Oct. 30, after the North Central Drug Task Force and Kanabec County Sheriff’s Office executed a pair of narcotics search warrants.

One of the search warrants was for a property inside the City of Mora, located on Hersey Avenue, while the second was executed in Arthur Township on Oslin Road. Authorities seized 70 grams of marijuana from the Mora address and made two arrests and confiscated 621 grams of marijuana and made five arrests at the Oslin Road home.

Methamphetamine paraphernalia was also discovered at both addresses, and at least one firearm was taken from the Arthur Township property.

Court documents indicate children were present at both sites during the execution of Friday’s search warrants.

All individuals taken into custody spent the weekend in jail and were arraigned Monday afternoon.

A statement issued Monday afternoon by Kanabec County Sheriff Steve Schulz said the Kanabec County Emergency Response team was used in the execution of the two warrants and that both the Mora Police Department and Kanabec Ambulance were called in for assistance.

Those facing charges as a result of Friday’s drug sweep are as follows:

• Dawn Anita Kellum, 32 of Mora, faces one fifth-degree felony count of aiding and abetting a drug crime (marijuana), one felony for storing methamphetamine paraphernalia in the presence of a child and two gross misdemeanor counts of child endangerment. Kellum was released on her own recognizance after a Monday afternoon arraignment.

• Mora resident Michael Thomas O’Neil Jr. faces two felony charges: a fifth-degree drug possession charge (marijuana) and another for allegedly storing methamphetamine paraphernalia in the presence of a child. O’Neil also face one gross misdemeanor child endangerment charge.

O’Neil was arraigned Monday afternoon and released on his own recognizance.

• Hinckley resident Fawn Lynn Marie Thomas, 34, has been charged by local prosecutors with one felony drug possession charge (marijuana). Thomas likewise was arraigned Monday afternoon and released on her own recognizance.

• North Branch resident Jeremy Douglas Kellum, 36, has also been charged with one fifth-degree drug possession charge (marijuana).

• Shannon Marie Zaudtke, 29, has been charged with one felony level drug charge for aiding and abetting the sale of marijuana and one felony for storing methamphetamine paraphernalia in the presence of a child. She was released on her own recognizance.

• Michael Paul Zaudke of Mora, age 31, faces three felonies: one for allegedly possessing a pistol/assault weapon after a previous conviction for a crime of violence, a fifth degree drug possession charge (marijuana) and one felony count of storing meth paraphernalia in the presence of a child or vulnerable adult.

• Ogilvie resident Shane Arthur Johnson, 21, has been charged with one fifth-degree felony for drug possession and has been released on his own recognizance.

All of those arrested last Friday are presumed innocent until proven guilty and will be making court appearances in the coming weeks.

what do all you people say about this that do not think that Sherriff Schultz can not protect our city he is takeing drugs off our streets. Great job Mr. Schultz

ah yes, the 'war on drugs'. The most expensive war that'll never be won.

Well, the war on poverty has cost much more I'd say and no end in sight so maybe we should stop throwing money at it also.

There is no war on poverty. The war is against lazy people who think they are entitled to everything without having to do anything.

Help is there for people who need it. The problem is it needs to be a TEMPORARY solution to the problem, NOT a way of life. Anyone could need help sometime, but you can't live off of that help forever.

I'm tired of hearing about how they can't find jobs when I see other people working two jobs. Are times tougher? Of course they are, but people can make it if they want to make it.

I haven't heard anyone say the Sheriff couldn't protect our city. Thats never really been the issue.

But at what cost to the rest of the county? This seems to be some kind of media opportunity to show the people of Mora that the County cops can take care of the city of Mora. I'm sure it was a legitimate bust, but I find it ridiculous that the City cops "were called in for assistance" when it should have been their responsibility IN THE CITY OF MORA in the first place.

What's going to happen when/if this a done deal? Am I going to call the Sherriff's Office with an emergency only to be told that there is no one available because they're tied up in the city? Oh, wait, they said they'd add more officers - then we can ALL pay more taxes to support law enforcement in the City of Mora. Because, as we all know, ONLY the City of Mora is important. The rest of the county can go to hell.

Can we let the whole cops can protect mora and there proving it alone..... We have bigger issues to deal with like drugs, kids ,education for our children. Think about the bigger picture, more then just the town cops have lost there jobs, children are put in terrible situations due to the economy. Maybe instead of fighting these issues we should all get together and come up with a safe solutions to the REAL problem affecting life.... AND AGAIN IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE CITY COPS LOSING THERE JOBS.... (I am very sorry for that and there family and I really trully hope they will walk away ok) But people move ON.... I personally know one of the children involved infact he played with my kids today! I can only find myself worried about him not weather or not the cops should keep there jobs.. Please pray for the familys and children involved in this situation. Judgement is not an issue now, safe healthy ways for these familys to survive is!

Thank you liberty_rising, I really think that is what this comes down to. How much did it cost to arrest these 7 people over POT??? Which, for anyone who didn't know, was legal until prohibition was lifted and the tobacco companies lobbied to keep pot illegal so they wouldn't have to compete with a far less dangerous product.

How can you seperate the two issues, mrsjessicajohnson? I didn't say anything about the cops losing their jobs. I AM CONCERNED ABOUT THE COUNTY COPS PROTECTING THE WHOLE COUNTY AND NOT JUST THE CITIZENS OF MORA! And this incident just goes toward proving my point.

Just this past spring, the Sherriff's department busted a meth lab less than 1/10 of a mile from my house. What if their policing efforts had been concentrated in-town Mora? Would they have caught these people? Maybe - maybe not. I really don't want to find out.

SAHMom,

So you're saying that just because it's pot and not like, heroine or something, that authorities shouldn't have busted them?

Sorry, but I disagree. There people should get off their lazy gluteus maximus's and get a real job. Sure, the economy isn't super right now, but Hardee's is always hiring. Working there probably isn't anyone's dream job, but I don't suppose selling drugs out of your house while children are present is either.

So basically, in my opinion, they're lazy losers.

And for once, I agree with ReallyFedUp. Wow. I never thought this day would come.

Ha, I am getting to you.

Sorry to say I know these people and when they walked into the court room it was a line of crackheads. And the judge, they need to send him back where he came from. For the judge to let the kids go back home !!! What a joke. Very unhappy with the system. KIDS IN DANGER!!!!!!!!!!!!

Whats up with Mora the last time I looked it was a very great place to be from a trap line and shovel a few drive ways and walks for gas money for the 12,3 skidoo to get to the hockey rink do you know I dont think we ever even had a key for our house all I remeber is freezzing my ass off trying to be the first one to cross mora lake one year. what I am trying to say is wow I remember when mora was a 2 cop town my dad was one and to tell the truth I would have to call him to find out who the sherif was at the time, boby blaisdales dad ernie was a state troopper at the time
