Alexis Hughes, daughter of Leah Smith was crowned Lucia 2020 on Sunday, Dec.8, at a ceremony held at Calvary Lutheran Church in Mora.

Besides Alexis, there were three other well qualified candidates. The other candidates were Annelise Moe, daughter of Scott and Caroline Moe, Ashley Peterson, daughter of Jeff and Marcy Peterson and Ria Edberg, daughter of Eugene and Kay Edberg.

One of the candidates, Ashley Peterson was a member of the Svenskarnas Dag Girls Choir which entertained with Christmas and other songs in Swedish and English.

Emcee Kay Edbeg read the story of Lucia to the Candle Girls and Star Boys explaining the Swedish tradition of the oldest child in the family bringing breakfast to everyone in the household. This would be on a dark winter day in December. Lucia carried a tray of saffron buns and coffee while dressed in a long white robe with a red sash. She also wore a crown of candles and sang the Santa Lucia song. The name Lucia means light.

For all residents of this area of Scandinavian decent or who are interested in the Scandinavian history of this area, this is a Swedish tradition the Dala Heritage Society is continuing with this program. With Alexis added to the list, there have been 43 Lucias from 1978 to 2020. Alexis Hughes, will participate in handing out medals at the Vasaloppet and participating in other activities during the year.
