George J. Schmidt, Sr., of Braham, died on Thursday, Feb. 6, 2020, at the Estates at Rush City. He was 89 years old.

He was born July 4, 1930, in Minneapolis, to George R. and Olga “Myrtle” (Anderson) Schmidt. He was united in marriage to Arlene Brummund on July 14, 1952. Together they had four children; Becky, Timothy, Donna and Randy.  They later divorced and he married Dorothy Garrett on Mother’s Day of 1981. Together they also had four children; Ann, George Jr., Mark and Clark. They also divorced.

During his lifetime he served three years in the Army and received the National Defense Service Medal. After discharge from the service, he worked on a few farms before becoming a carpenter. When he could no longer work as a carpenter, he found other jobs to provide for his family. Eventually he became self-employed as a sewing machine repair man in Princeton, Willow River and Mora before finally retiring.

He was a Scout Master and active in his church. He enjoyed playing the guitar and harmonica as well as putting puzzles together.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers and sisters.

He is survived by his eight children as well as many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends. 

In keeping with his wishes, no public service will be held. A private family graveside service with military honors will be held at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.  Arrangements are by the Rock Ingebrand Funeral Home of Braham. Condolences may be posted at
