To the editor,

I had a really nice thing happen to me the other day.  I was having a rough day (not the nice part). Just one of those days where things were not going my way, and I was quite down.  I know I am a very blessed man, and I am thankful for the life I have, but as any human being does from time to time I was feeling dejected. I was struggling with my feelings and actually making myself feel worse until I happened to run into Mike.

Mike is a friend, but I had not sought out a friend that day. We just ran into one another by chance. Mike had no idea what my day was like or what was going on in my head. He greeted me with a warm smile and was genuinely kind in his words. He didn’t have to be. He could have said, “Hello” and kept walking, but he didn’t. He took an extra minute out of his day to make a connection, to be kind. Nothing out of the ordinary for him. I left our five minute conversation feeling better, and I thought to myself how fortunate I was to have that chance encounter.

My point is that all it took to turn my day around was a little bit of kindness. I realize that many people suffer from many terrible things and that one random act of kindness is not going to fix everything for them but it certainly can’t hurt.

I hope everyone has a Mike in their lives, and I hope I can be more like Mike in my interactions with others.
