To the editor,

It has been 64 years since six members of the Reinder Akkerman family immigrated to the United States of America. We arrived in St. Paul that year. Many things have happened in those 64 years: learning a new language, find housing, find jobs, etc. etc.

Fortunately we succeeded and slowly immersed ourselves in the American way of life. We raised families, served in the military, became citizens and enjoyed life that maybe only a country like America can offer.

I believe that this country has benefitted from this immigrant family as this family has benefitted greatly from what America has given all of us.

I was dismayed reading about our county elected officials denial not giving some unfortunate the same opportunity that our family has received. I applaud my friend, Laird Mork’s comments in the Kanabec County Times dated Jan. 2.

After all we are a country of immigrants. God bless all of you and God bless America.

64-year Mora Resident
