To the editor,
Wisdom can come from many sources. One that comes to mind is “Life is like a box of chocolates,” you never know what you’re going to get. Another one is “stupid is as stupid does,” both are from the story of Forest Gump. In life, we are often required to make intelligent choices, like choosing to spend money on one thing or another. Often it is the choice to spend other people’s money, like millions of dollars for tearing down a perfectly good school.
Mora school leaders will run a $60,000,000 referendum on Nov. 5. It makes no sense. It is stupid. Superintendent Schultz’s article in the July 25, Kanabec County Times would have you believe that the current high school is falling down around his ears. Fact: the majority of student contact classrooms were built between 1976 to 1989. How old it that? 30 years. Isn’t it stupid to tear down a brick and mortar building after only 30 years? How is this smart stewardship of the public trust? We have enough taxes on our plate as it is.
Sure, there are general repairs needed. Members of the community met all last year and came up with a plan to make these repairs. It was called the 3R Plan, and would cost less than about $6,000,000. How many taxpayers remember the money spent on the Wellness Center? I’d like to see a list of how that money was spent.
Ever drive by Mora High School? Ever walk the halls? Ever go to an event? We are just fine. School leaders have their heads in the clouds. The superintendent just got $20,000 to stay on and push this referendum through. According to The U.S. Dept. of Labor, the average American employee makes less than $18,000 per year. Maybe even less in Mora? The money is not here. We’re not in Edina, or Eagan, or Anoka. I know folks who moved here to get away from high taxes and high spending.
Can you imagine a huge wrecking machine leveling Mora High School, a source of community pride? What a waste. What a waste of our money. What bad school leadership. If you do something stupid, people will call you stupid. “Stupid is as stupid does.” Mora taxpayers aren’t stupid. Mora taxpayers, send another message. The sixth referendum. Please vote no on Nov. 5.
