Thomas S. Mohr

Thomas Sam Mohr was born June 27, 1929 at Stillwater, Minnesota and was the son of K. Gordon and Carrie (Helland) Mohr. Raised by his grandparents, Tom attended school in Stillwater, eventually moving to Glendive Montanan to be closer to his parents.

At the young age of 18, Tom enlisted in the U. S. Air Force and served a year and seven months as an aircraft mechanic during the Korean Conflict.

Returning home from active duty, Tom met and married Judy Hall and the couple settled in the south metro area of Minneapolis. Tom worked for Frank Knapp who owned an Allis-Chalmers dealership as a mechanic and started driving bus as well.

When the family moved to Rosemount, Tom started an excavating business known as Rosemount Excavating Inc. which was primarily involved in septic installations and landscaping. Around 1962 Tom started Rosemount Sanitation; a garbage business which he operated until selling in 1972. During these business years Tom was very active in politics and got to know many politicians closely.

Planning to buy a business in Rush City, Tom and sons moved to the Rush City area. The garbage business deal fell through, but Tom purchased the Hiram Stevens farm north east of Harris and started to work with Cleve Van Dyke trucking grain. For a short time, Tom and his sons owned and operated the Drying Plant in Rush City.

While trucking in the early 1980’s, Tom met his long-time companion Kathryn Joliffe and for several years they lived on a farm near Wright, MN. and also in Rush City. Ill health caused Tom to reside at the Golden Living Center in Rush City for about the last year. He died June 15, 2008 at the Veteran’s Administration Medical Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota at the age of 78 years.

Thomas is survived by his long-time companion Kathryn Joliffe; sons and daughter-in-law: Charles & Sandra Mohr of Braham, MN and John Mohr of Harris, MN; grandsons: Daniel & Jenne Mohr of Columbus, IN and Steven Mohr of Hawaii; great grandson: Tavie; brother and sisters-in-law: Charles & Shirley Mohr of Glendive, MT and Myrt Mohr of Apple Valley, MN; sisters and brother-in-law: Carol Frasch and Mary Lou & Bill Carrico, also of Glendive; many nieces and nephews. Thomas was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Bob Mohr.

Funeral services were celebrated; 11 a.m. Thursday, June 19, 2008 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Brunswick, Minnesota with the Reverend Lori Blake officiating. Music was provided by Becky Fladebo. Interment was in the Prairie Lake Cemetery at Wright, Minnesota.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Funeral & Cremation Service, Olson Chapel, Rush City, Minnesota.
