AOW

From the coach-Jayson Pautzke: For Athlete of the Week I nominate my three captains for the 2020 baseball season. Lucas Athey, Caleb Koch and Jaden Ponto.   They’ve been dedicated to Mora Baseball for most of their lives - they’ve played a lot of baseball at a variety of levels. They are hard workers that love to play the game.

Caleb Koch- Senior Captain

Caleb

Position: I play infield and I also pitch.

Tell us about the sports and activities you are involved in: I play baseball, football and I also wrestled this year.

What is your favorite thing about being involved in sports?: My favorite thing about being in sports would be, just being able to hang out with your friends and play with other kids that have the same competitive drive as you.

Tell us about a person who has influenced you: I wouldn’t really say there is one person that has influenced me. I would say there are a bunch, from my family supporting me, to the coaches who pushed me to do my best.

What is the highlight of your athletic career?: Definitely would be my junior season of baseball. I improved so much last year, hitting .405, winning an All- Conference award along with being named to the All Section 7AA Team.

With spring practices and games suspended, how are you staying active?: I don’t do too much, try and do a small short workout at home along with trying to  throw and hit at least once a week.

What are some of your goals for the future?: Some future goals are to go to a two year school for graphic design and while there hopefully be able to play baseball.

Lucas Athey-Senior Captain

Lucas

Position: Pitcher, catcher, infield

Tell us about the sports and activities you are involved in: This year I was in football, basketball and baseball.

What is your favorite thing about being involved in sports?: My favorite thing about sports is competing and having fun with my friends.

Tell us about a person who has influenced you: My dad has been an influence on me by always pushing me to be better.

What is the highlight of your athletic career?: This year I hit a game-winning buzzer beater in the playoffs for basketball. That was a pretty special moment for me.

With spring practices and games suspended, how are you staying active?: I’ve been going on bike rides and hitting baseballs off a tee.

What are some of your goals for the future?: I’m going to college at the University of Minnesota Morris and then I want to become a teacher/coach.

Jaden Ponto-Senior Captain

Jaden

Position: I play multiple positions but mainly outfield and pitcher.

Tell us about the sports and activities you are involved in: I am in football, wrestling and baseball. It’s a very weird combination, most people don’t do that.

What is your favorite thing about being involved in sports?: Building a relationship with the team, you see the same people every day and it creates a bond that you can’t make on your own and obviously game days are the best.

Tell us about a person who has influenced you: My parents have been my biggest influence since beginning sports. My mom has always put me in every camp and training thing that would bring me to the next level and my dad has always pushed me and taught me everything he knows. I have worked multiple hours on my craft.

What is the highlight of your athletic career?: My favorite time was going to state with the football team my sophomore year! I had many awards that year as a rookie, also winning state when we were in seventh grade was pretty cool.

With spring practices and games suspended, how are you staying active?: I work out everyday, still getting the team together and going to throw and hit in cages, my dad gives me infield all the time even if the season wasn’t suspended. Also I have a job, I work Monday through Friday.

What are some of your goals for the future?:  I really just want to be happy with what I do. I would like to get into construction management if I decide to keep my job that I’m working this summer. Most likely I will be attending St. John’s University playing football and baseball receiving my four year Bachelor of Science Nursing degree and become a travel nurse.
