The Mora Blue Devils amateur baseball team had a light week with just one game on Sunday, July 14. But, it was an important game to try and maintain a strangle hold on first place in the Eastern Minny North league. Mora did just that with a 3-0 win over a good Rum River Bandits team.
The story of the game, other than the sweltering heat, was the pitching of Derek Graves. Graves threw a complete game, two hit shutout with an impressive 15 strikeouts while walking no one.
Mora scored right away in the first inning. Brian Kiel led off the game with an infield single, followed by a Michael Humphrey single that moved Kiel to third base. A throwing error from the catcher led to Kiel scoring for a 1-0 lead.
In the fourth inning Mora added to their lead. Ryan VanSomeren reached first base with an infield hit. That was then immediately followed by a two run homer by Darin Erickson to make it 3-0.
That was all Graves needed to secure the win. At one point during the game Graves retired 17 consecutive batters.
With the win Mora now stands 9-4 in the Eastern Minny League while Hinckley is 7-5 and Hibbing 8-6. The last week of the regular season will be a busy one as Mora will travel to Rush City Wednesday night, July 17 for a 7:30 game against Braham. The Blue Devils will host weekend games on Saturday, July 20 against Nowthen at 4:00 p.m. and then Sunday, July 21 at 2:00 p.m. against Hinckley. For more visit morabluedevils.teams.mnbaseball.org.
