Mora hockey

Mora/Milaca Head HockeyCoach Kevin Nolt shares about the ongoing 2021 season:

How is the makeup of the varsity team different from last year?: Every year in sports is a change to the makeup of the team. However, we have great leaders who are showing the younger players the culture of the program. We have a lot of hockey players grades eighth-12th, which allowed us to have a JV team. A lot of changes, but players have taken the reigns of leadership that the former seniors demonstrated last year.

What are the team’s goals and priorities for the season?: The biggest goal is to be able to play all 18 games that we were scheduled. If we are able to do that we will be able to continue to get better and grow into a team that can contend in sections.

What pandemic-related changes are most challenging and how are the athletes adapting to those changes?: I think the easiest answer is masks, but the players just want to play and if they just have to wear a mask they are more than willing. I think the biggest challenge is actually busing. We have been fortunate enough to have Gayle Stassen coordinate the buses for us. Finding drivers for two buses for away games is not easy to do. In fact, we have played a team that isn’t providing a team with transportation.

What do you hope these young athletes will take away from their sports experience this season?: Team sports are all about working with others and overcoming differences for a common goal. In hockey we need as many players on the same page to be successful. This year players have been given even more adversity with COVID-19 and the changes the league has implemented. A quote that I have been reinforcing throughout this year with players is that “10% of life is what happens to you and 90% of life is how you react to that 10%.” This translates on the ice and of course off.

What is the best way for fans to support the team this year?: We do have games at home streamed on YouTube. It is done via an ipad so you wont get much sound, but the rink does have Livebarn which you need to pay a small monthly fee. That platform gives you sounds.
