Mora students who signed letters of intent for their respective colleges are, from left, Rita Erickson, University of Minnesota Morris; Tayven Peterson, Northern State University; James Oslin, Bethel University; and Kenny Randt, Mesabi Range Community College.
Four Mora seniors will be continuing their athletic careers to the post-secondary level, having signed letters of intent to play at their respective colleges and universities.
The four are Rita Erickson, who will attend the University of Minnesota Morris and join its swim team; Mora record-breaking hurdler Tayven Peterson, who will attend Northern State University in Aberdeen, South Dakota; and baseball players James Oslin and Kenny Randt who will attend Bethel University and Mesabi Range Community College, respectively.
The Mora seniors signed their letters at a ceremony at the high school on Wednesday, May 3. Present were parents of the athletes as well as their coaches and school administrators.
“As you sign your letters of intent, remember that this is just the beginning of a new chapter in your lives,” Activities Director Charlie Whitbred told the students. “Take some time today to thank all the people who have supported you throughout your athletic careers — your coaches, parents, family members and friends. They have been there every step of the way, pushing you to be your best and encouraging you when you needed it most.”
Whitbred also told the athletes to “never forget where you came from. Your time as a Mustang has helped shape you into the people you are today, and that should always be remembered and cherished. Your school and community are proud of you, and we cannot wait to see what the future holds for you.”
The event was part of the National Signing Day for NCAA Division III schools. The University of Minnesota Morris and Bethel are both D3 schools; Mesabi is a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association; Northern is a Division II school, but since no signing ceremony was held in the fall or winter in Mora, Tayven was able to participate in the National Letter of Intent program.
