To the editor,

Benjamin Franklin was asked what kind of government do we have? “A Republic,” he replied, “if you can keep it.”

Can we?

The founders valued deliberation. For decades, the evolution of our country grew out of deliberation and compromise. Real deliberation demands listening and putting aside our preconceived versions of  facts and history.

We are diverse; our lifestyles, experiences and values span a seemingly insurmountable chasm. But no matter, we are One Nation. Both ends of the spectrum - strident Trump supporters and far left progressives - are outside the circle representing the swath of Americans large enough to have a reasonable chance of governing without discord. They may be unable to listen to each other but perhaps they can tolerate one another.

Do you love our country enough to try to not ‘hate’ your neighbor? If not, we will be unable to keep this Republic.
