Spring arrives after three snows on a robin’s tail - or so the saying goes - so could someone please inform spring it’s about 17 snows late this year? While there are no flakes predicted at the moment of this writing, the waning days of April are forecast as gloomy, chilly and wet…three key ingredients to sports postponements. Since last week’s optimism was folly, let’s take a more cautious look ahead at some upcoming games and meets…
Thursday, April 27: Let’s Play Two!
The Mora Mustangs’ baseball team is scheduled to host the Zimmerman Thunder for a twilight doubleheader starting at 4:00 p.m. on the Mustangs’ new field. These Granite Ridge Conference foes split two games last season, with each team winning on the others’ home field. Mild temps, cloudy skies and a slight chance of rain…perhaps the field lights and covered bleachers will both get tested before the final out is recorded.
Friday, April 28:Â Tracking East
The Ogilvie Lions and Mora Mustangs track and field programs will be at Pine City on Friday afternoon for the Dragons’ Chengwatana Track Meet. Held the final Friday of April each year, the Chengwatana is usually the largest regular season meet of the season for both teams. Twelve schools will attend, with a nice mix of conference and section opponents for nearly every team. Start time is 3:45 p.m.
Monday, May 1:Â Home and Home
Ogilvie and Mora will cross paths again on May Day, but this time on the softball diamond as the Lions pay a visit to the Mustangs’ home turf. This is the first meeting in several seasons between the two teams, both of whom are coming off tough seasons last year. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
A half hour later in Ogilvie, the Lions’ baseball team will start play against the Barnum Bombers. The two teams did not face each other last season, when both finished one game over .500. The last meeting between the two was a one-run thriller in extra innings two seasons ago…history says this game could be the match-up of the week.
Tuesday, May 2: Let’s Play Another Two!
The Ogilvie softball field will be the site of another doubleheader when the Hinckley/Finlayson Jaguars travel west to take on the Lady Lions. Coming off an 11-11 season, the Jaguars crushed the Lions twice in Hinckley last season. At 4:00 p.m. the Lions will look to sweep that memory away with a couple of W’s of their own.
Wednesday, May 3:Â Fore!
And finally, some golfing action. The Mora boys’ golf team will host an eight team best-ball tournament at Spring Brook Golf Course in Mora. This first home meet will start at noon, and will likely be some of the first competitive swings of the season for several teams.
As always, none of these events are written in waterproof ink; interested fans would be wise to keep one eye on the weather and the other on the online activities calendar of the Mora and Ogilvie schools.
