The Mora boys basketball squad (20-4) has endured a hard patch of injuries the past few weeks with starting guards Max Sampson and Gage Braiedy, with ankle and hip injuries respectively. The injuries have exposed some vulnerabilities against Granite Ridge Conference foes like Zimmerman, losing 68-60, Albany, losing 46-45, and losing to Milaca 65-52 since Jan. 26. Optimistically, it has given the bench a lot more minutes to improve the depth of an already dominant team leading into Section 6AA play, which starts Thursday, March 9. Players like Josh Heggernes, Madox Balmer and Cole Schwarzbauer gained valuable minutes, helping the Mustangs score 8.3 points per game off the bench or when Sampson and/or Braiedy were unable to play.Â
On Tuesday, Feb. 21, the boys traveled to Pine City to take on the Dragons (13-12). Despite playing the entire game without starter Gage Braiedy, the Mustangs held the Dragons to 36% field goal percentage and won 64-51.Â
Max Samspon led Mora with 14 points. Jonah Smart was right behind him with 13 points, with Dallas Fix scoring 12 points. Sophomore Josh Heggernes, who played Braidey’s minutes, scored 10 points. James Oslin was one point and one rebound away from a double-double.Â
On Friday, Feb. 24, the boys traveled to Foley (9-14) and won 59-40. Mora took advantage of 30 points in the paint, while only allowing 16 points between the blocks. Jonah Smart was very impressive, leading all scorers with 19 points. Gage Braiedy poured in 13 points. Dallas Fix was one rebound away from a double-double, scoring 10 points.Â
The boys then hosted Aitkin on Saturday, Feb. 25, winning 66-36 for a statement win, and their third straight victory since Friday, Feb. 17. Dallas Fix led all scorers with 19 points, going 9 of 13 from the field, while grabbing 10 rebounds for a double-double. Jonah Smart was one rebound and one point away from a double-double, and Gage Braiedy scored 17 points.Â
Mora hosted Spectrum (17-7) on Tuesday, Feb. 28, for a Section 6AA matchup and their final home game of the regular season. They travel to St. Cloud Cathedral (14-9) on Friday, March 3, for their final regular season game. Â
