James Oslin sinks a free throw in Mora’s 64-42 victory against Aitkin.

The Mora boys basketball team has two victories under their belts going 2-0 to start the young season. Mora had their season opener at Maple Lake on Tuesday, Dec 7, taking home a dominating 57-14 victory over the Irish. The Mustang’s strong defense only allowed the Irish to score six points in the first half and eight in the second half.

The Mustangs were led in scoring by Garret Honstrom with 18 points, and Dom Beaulieu with 10 points. Mora out-rebounded Maple Lake 26-19, stole the ball 17 times and blocked four shots. Mora shot 100% from the free throw line, making four out of four attempts.

Mora 64  Aitkin 42

The boys again took the floor on Thursday, Dec. 9, this time at Aitkin. Both the Mustangs and Gobblers played tight defense in the beginning, but Gage Braiedy and Garret Honstrom each led the Mustangs in the first half by scoring six points each. The Mustangs took a 26-19 lead into halftime.

The bad news of the evening came when Garret Honstrom exited the game early with a wrist injury. The Mustangs’ bench stepped up as nine different players scored in the second half. Leading the charge with eight points was Max Sampson. He finished the night with 12 points, four boards and eight assists.

Mora’s bench accounted for 42% of the scoring, contributing 27 of the 64 points scored throughout the game. James Oslin finished the night with 10 points and five rebounds.

Mora’s tenacious defense and disciplined offense gave them separation against the Gobblers around five minutes into the second half. Mora out rebounded Aitkin 37-29 and comfortably won the game 64-42.

Up Next: Mora takes to the road again as they travel to Kimball Friday, Dec. 17. They play their second home game of the season on Monday, Dec. 20, versus Chisago Lakes.
