Mora/Milaca varsity hockey has retained many of their top players but other changes may throw wrenches into the season. Head Coach Kevin Nolt provided insights into the coming season, including that their main goal is to focus on what they can control.

Describe the makeup of this year’s varsity team:

This year’s squad has 33 players in grades eight through 12. We have three players from Milaca and two of them are new to our team. Six of our top seven scorers, including our top three, are back for this season. We are an experienced group with 13 seniors leading the team. Jack Kritzeck and Parker Mitchell are two returning captains to the team and will be joined by fellow senior and newly elected captain Carter Ashworth.

What are the team’s goals and priorities this season?

As a team we have goals that we want to accomplish, but the main goal is to get better every week on and off the ice. If we do that we are going to be very competitive come playoff time.

How are your opponents looking this year? What schools do you believe will be the most challenging competitors?

This year the section has realigned so the defending section champion is no longer in the section, however the section added two historically strong programs in Little Falls and St. Cloud Cathedral. It’s a long season and we are going to focus on what we can control as a team.

What do you hope these young athletes will take away from their sports experience?

In hockey we are able to put 20 players on the ice to compete every game and all of those players will be contributing to the team’s success. This team game allows players to learn what it takes to trust and support each other, because they need each other for true success. I am also excited for our younger players to learn what it means to be a varsity hockey player in Mora from our senior heavy squad.

Is there anything else you want to share about the team or Winter 2021-2022 season?

We are excited to get the season going. The boys have put a tremendous amount of time and energy throughout the off-season and they have been putting in the work during the early portion of this season, too.
