The Mora softball team is 5-5 after two weeks of play and is getting better and better each game. Lauren Kohlgraf pitched two victories in week one (April 24 - April 28) against Little Falls and Milaca. She also compiled 11 quality at-bats which included eight hits, eight runs, seven RBI , a home run, three walks and two strikeouts in 15 at-bats.Â
Last week (May 1 - May 5), Mora took down Ogilvie 15-0. Rhiannon Ashworth and Aubrey Athey led the way with two hits each and Sophie Steffen had four RBIs. The real highlight was freshman pitcher Abigail Kelash throwing a no-hitter against the Lions, striking out six batters and walking three.Â
Double headers versus Zimmerman on Tuesday, May 2, and Thursday May 4, against St. Cloud Cathedral proved to be a challenge, as Mora dropped all four games. Highlights were home runs hit by Quincy Asmus (solo shot) and a three-run homer by Lindsey Nosbush in game one at Zimmerman. The girls battled in both game-two’s, losing to Zimmerman 7-5 and eighth ranked Cathedral 8-6. Aubrey Athey threw 5.2 strong innings vs Cathedral in game two, allowing only one earned run.Â
Friday, May 5, the girls traveled to Duluth Marshall and made light work of the Hilltoppers, beating them 22-4 in four innings of work. It was a great team effort, as the girls collected 15 hits, 12 walks, only striking out three times in 28 chances.Â
The week-two star of the week went to senior shortstop Sophia Steffen as she compiled 14 quality at-bats, 13 hits (five extra base hits), 10 RBIs (eight RBIs with two outs), eight runs, three walks, and zero strikeouts in 19 at-bats.Â
Monday, May 8, the girls traveled to Pine City and scored in five out of the seven innings of play, winning 13-5. Junior pitcher Lauren Kohlgraf pitched a seven inning three-hit game, striking out 11 Dragons and giving up two earned runs. With the bat, Kohlgraf was a double away from hitting for the cycle. She finished the afternoon with a triple, two singles, and a home run. She knocked in three RBIs and scored three runs. The win brought the season record to 5-5. With nine games left, the Mustangs look to finish the regular season strong.Â
Up next: The Mustangs travel to Foley on Thursday, May 11, for a double header before hosting Isle on Friday, May 12. First pitch is at 4:30 p.m.Â
